Thanks for the feedback. It is likely Lesotho's enclave geometry inside South Africa confusing the hover detection. I'll check it!

Mobile is always the real challenge. These get too small fast. Options would be trimming detail (fewer age groups), or showing one arm at a time. Something to figure out.

A bugreport and a suggestion: It doesnt recognize Lesotho, maybe because it's surrounded by 1 country (South Africa)? Would it be possible to zoom in more, as it's really hard to target small countries (Caribbean islands, Malta, etc)

Thank you for the feedback. Lesotho should be included, probably its enclave geometry inside South Africa confuses the matching. I will check it. On zooming: the map is capped at lower zoom levels as a performance compromise, which is also why very small countries and islands are left out.

Is there a way to add a toggle to pop up a country picker when smaller countries are in the window? Or at least a toggle for turning on/off the center point of the window so it is easier to target the small countries?

this is amazing work, one of the best posts I've seen here. just have one suggestion: include a textbox to seach for the particular country, so that the viewer focuses on it once you search. asking for this because I found it quite hard to focus on small countries (Andorra, Cape Verde, Brunei, Lesotho, for example)

Thanks for the feedback, you're right. Liechtenstein and other very small countries and islands are left out. It was a performance compromise, which is also why the map only supports lower zoom levels. The whole-world stats you get when selecting one are just the default when no country is matched.

Yeah, I also was shocked by it, most LATAM countries in the 90s had an absurd mortality rate in children and it reduced abruptly in the new century, vaccines maybe?

Source: World Population Prospects 2024, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division. Figures are modelled estimates harmonised from censuses, surveys, and vital statistics to produce consistent time series across countries.

The three arms show: population (share of population by age and sex), mortality (share of deaths by age and sex), and fertility (PASFR: percent age-specific fertility rate).

Tool: VisQuill GDK for the visualization and the three-armed profile layout, MapLibre for the map, OpenFreeMap for the base tiles. VisQuill is a tool I built myself.
